Anniversary gifts for parents when you will not be there

A woman packing a small box at a kitchen counter to mail to her parents

Most people reading this will not be in the room on the day, and that is the real problem to solve. A gift posted to parents two states away is competing with your absence rather than with other gifts, which is why flowers feel thin: they arrive, they are admired, they are dead by Thursday, and nothing about them says you were thinking about this for more than four minutes.

What works from a distance is anything that carries evidence of attention: something arranged rather than bought, something that needs other people, or something that could only have come from you. Below are twelve, including what to do if the anniversary is a fiftieth, and the three defaults worth skipping.

The ideas, twelve of them

1.Book the table instead of sending the flowers

Call a restaurant near them, book it for two, pay in advance and tell them where to be. It takes fifteen minutes, it works from anywhere in the world, and it puts them somewhere pleasant on the actual evening rather than putting an object in their kitchen. Pick a place they would not book for themselves.

2.Collect messages from the people who were at the wedding

Thirty or fifty years on, that guest list is scattered and some of it is gone. Finding the ones still around, even for a paragraph each, produces something nobody can buy and something you are unusually well placed to do from a distance, because it is all phone calls and email. Start weeks out. The slowness is the gift.

3.Get their wedding photographs digitised

A wedding album from the seventies or eighties is fading in a closet and is usually the only copy. Mail-in scanning services do the whole album for a couple of hundred dollars, and the same companies handle the video off whatever format nothing plays any more. Unglamorous, genuinely urgent, and the whole family ends up using it.

4.Ask them to tell the story, and record it

How they met, what each of them actually thought, what the first year was really like. You have heard fragments and never the whole thing straight through. A scheduled phone call with the recorder running is twenty minutes of work and produces the only thing on this list that gets more valuable every year you leave it. Ask permission first and then mostly listen.

5.Pay for the thing they keep putting off

The dental work, the new glasses, the gutters, the trip to see their own sibling. Parents who will spend freely on grandchildren defer this indefinitely. Paying for it and handling the booking removes the two reasons they have not, and it is invisible as a gift, which is exactly why it lands.

6.Send something that gets used up

If you want a parcel to arrive, make it consumable: the good coffee, a box from a bakery they liked, something regional they cannot get where they live. It creates no storage problem, carries no obligation to display it, and nobody has ever felt burdened by it. It is the safe answer when you do not know what is missing.

7.Organise the call rather than joining it

If siblings are scattered, somebody has to be the one who picks a time, chases everybody and sets it up, and that somebody is usually nobody. Being the one who does it is a real gift to your parents and a slightly annoying one to your siblings, which is the correct distribution.

8.For a fiftieth, start three months out

A fiftieth is the one where the useful gifts all have long lead times: tracking down surviving guests, getting the album scanned, getting family across the country into one place. Anything you start in the last fortnight will be something bought. Put a reminder in for three months before and the options open up completely.

9.Write to them separately

Everything parents receive is addressed to them jointly, which quietly means nobody says anything to either of them in particular. Two letters, one each, about what you have watched them each carry. It costs the price of a stamp, it is the item most likely to still be in a drawer in ten years, and distance makes no difference to it at all.

10.Three defaults worth skipping

Flowers, unless they are part of something larger, because they are what everybody sends and they say very little. A framed photo, when the frames on their wall have not changed in fifteen years. And a gift card, which is legible as the amount you spent and nothing else.

11.Ask what they want to do while they still can do it

Parents at a fortieth or fiftieth usually have one thing they talk about and never book, and the window on it is shorter than anybody wants to acknowledge. Asking directly, then handling the booking rather than suggesting it, is the difference between a nice idea and a thing that happens.

12.If you can go, go, and say so early

Nothing posted competes with turning up. If there is any version of the year where you can be there, tell them weeks in advance rather than arriving as a surprise, because the anticipation is a large part of what they get. A cheap flight booked in August beats anything you could put in a box.

Quick answers

What is a good anniversary gift for parents?

Something that carries attention rather than money, especially if you live far away. Book and pay for a table near them, get their wedding album digitised, or collect messages from people who were at the wedding. All three are things they cannot arrange for themselves and all three work from another state.

What should you get parents for a 50th anniversary?

Start three months out, because the gifts worth giving all have lead times: finding surviving wedding guests, getting the album and video digitised, getting scattered family into one room. Anything begun in the last two weeks ends up being something bought rather than something arranged.

What to send parents for their anniversary when you live far away?

Something arranged beats something posted. A restaurant booked and paid for puts them somewhere on the actual evening. If a parcel matters to you, make it consumable so it creates no storage problem, and add a letter to each of them separately, which is the part that gets kept.

What anniversary gifts should you avoid for parents?

Flowers on their own, since everybody sends them and they say little. Another framed photo, when the frames on their wall have not changed in years. And a gift card, which reads as the amount you spent and nothing else.
