50th anniversary ideas for the family they started

Plan a fiftieth around the family, hold it in the afternoon, and keep it shorter than you think. By year fifty the couple are usually in their seventies, guests their age tire early and struggle to hear in a loud room, and the most remarkable thing present is the family itself: children, grandchildren, sometimes a great grandchild, every one of whom exists because of this marriage. A golden anniversary that works is built around that.

It is almost always organized by the adult children, often from different states and on different budgets. Below are thirteen ideas, including what to do with gold besides buying it, how to keep a vow renewal short, and the conversation siblings need to have before anyone books a venue.

The ideas, thirteen of them

1.Hold it in the afternoon

A two o clock lunch suits people in their seventies far better than a seven o clock dinner. Nobody drives home in the dark, energy is at its best, the great grandchildren are between naps, and guests in their eighties can actually come. Evening parties for a fiftieth tend to be planned by people in their forties picturing their own preferences. Ask the couple what time of day they feel best and book that.

2.Make the room quiet enough to hear in

Hearing is what quietly ruins these events. A restaurant back room with hard walls, a playlist and sixty people talking becomes a wall of noise for anyone with hearing aids, and the couple spend their own party nodding at sentences they did not catch. Choose somewhere with carpet and soft furnishings, skip the background music during the meal, and use a microphone for anything said to the whole room.

3.Get the one photograph

Every person descended from this marriage, plus the two of them, in one frame. It sounds obvious and it gets missed constantly, because nobody is in charge of it and somebody always leaves early. Put a named person on it, schedule it for the first half hour while everyone is present and tidy, and hire a photographer for that alone if the budget stretches to nothing else. This picture is what the day leaves behind.

4.Give the grandchildren a real job

Grandchildren at these events usually end up at a side table with a tablet. Give them a part. A teenager can interview each grandparent on video for ten minutes the week before. A ten year old can read out the wedding announcement from fifty years ago. The small ones can hand out the cake. Their grandparents will watch them do it more closely than they watch anything else that day.

5.Gold, starting with the rings they already own

Gold is the traditional fiftieth gift, and a new gold object is a hard sell for two people who are trying to own less. Look at their hands first. After fifty years many wedding rings no longer fit over a knuckle, have worn thin, or live in a drawer. Having them resized, repaired or remade by a good jeweler, with the couple involved in the decision, is gold that gets worn every day.

6.A vow renewal, kept to five minutes

Plenty of couples like the idea and dread the production. Keep it tiny. The original vows if anyone can find them, read once, standing where they are, with a child or grandchild officiating. No procession, no outfit to shop for, no rewritten vows listing fifty years of lessons. The power of it comes from the same words being said by the same two people, and that takes about five minutes.

7.Request the official greeting early

In the United States the White House greetings office has long sent congratulations to couples married fifty years or more, and many governors and members of Congress do the same on request. Availability and lead times change, so check the current request pages and ask at least two months ahead. It costs nothing, and for a generation that keeps letters, an envelope from that address tends to end up framed.

8.Put it in the local paper

Many local newspapers still run milestone anniversary announcements, often with a then and now pair of photographs. Some charge and some do not. For a couple who have lived in one town for decades, this reaches exactly the right people: old neighbors, the congregation, former coworkers, everyone who would never see a social media post. Call the paper a month ahead and ask what they need from you.

9.Bring one thing back from the wedding

One, chosen carefully. The cake flavor, the song they first danced to played once, a dish from the reception, the flowers from the bouquet on the table. A full recreation turns the afternoon into a costume party. A single detail that only the two of them and the oldest guests will recognize does more, and the moment they notice it is worth the effort of finding out what it was.

10.Siblings, settle the money and the roles first

Most fiftieth parties are planned by two to five adult children with different incomes, different distances to travel and old opinions about each other. Have one call before anything is booked. Agree the total, agree who pays what without insisting on equal shares, and give each person one area they fully own. The arguments that sour these events usually trace back to one unspoken assumption about who was covering the caterer.

11.Name who is missing, once, early

By fifty years the room has absences. The best man, their own parents, a sibling, sometimes a child. Everyone is aware of it and nobody wants to be the one to say it. A single sentence in the first toast, naming them warmly and moving on, lets the room relax. Left unsaid it hangs over the whole afternoon. Said once, it becomes part of the celebration, which is where those people belong.

12.If one of them is unwell, go smaller and shorter

Many fiftieths happen with one partner managing illness or memory loss. Scale the day to the person with less capacity. Ninety minutes, familiar faces only, a familiar place, name tags if names are slipping, and a quiet room to step into. Music from their early years together often reaches someone when conversation cannot. A small gathering they can take in is better than a big one that overwhelms them.

13.Give them something to go through the next morning

The party is loud, fast and over in three hours, and at seventy five they will take in a fraction of it. Before the day, ask every branch of the family, and the friends who cannot travel, for a photo and a few lines about what this marriage gave them. Collect it on one page they can read slowly over coffee the next day. If they are not phone people, print it as well.
