25th anniversary ideas, and who the day is actually for

A couple in their fifties sitting on their porch steps in the late afternoon, laughing

Ask first, and ask early. A twenty fifth is the anniversary where the couple and the people organizing it most often want different things: the adult children want to mark it publicly, and the couple, twenty five years in, frequently want a very good dinner with six people and no speeches. Almost every 25th that goes badly is that disagreement never being said out loud.

Once that is settled the rest is easy. Below are twelve ideas for either answer, including what to do with silver beyond buying something silver, and how to run the speeches if there are going to be speeches.

The ideas, twelve of them

1.Ask them, months out, and take the answer

Not "would you like a party", which everybody answers politely. Ask what they would actually want to be doing that evening, and whether they want to be looked at. A couple who say they want something small are usually telling the truth, and overriding it produces an event they endure. This one question decides everything else on the list.

2.Silver, used rather than bought

The traditional gift is the oldest and best understood entry on the whole anniversary chart, and the obvious move is to buy something silver, which almost always ends up in a cupboard. The better version is silver they already own: the cutlery from the wedding, cleaned and actually used, or a piece from a parent brought back into the house.

3.Find the people who were at the wedding

Twenty five years on, most of the guest list is scattered and some of it is gone. Tracking down the ones who are still around, even just to collect a message, produces something nobody can buy. Do this early, because it takes weeks and it is the part that makes the day specific to them.

4.Rescue the wedding photographs

A wedding from around 2001 sits in a specific technological hole: too late for good prints, too early for anything to have survived a hard drive. Getting the album scanned properly, or the video off a format nothing plays now, is unglamorous and genuinely urgent, and it is the gift the whole family ends up using.

5.If there are speeches, cap them at two

The failure mode of a 25th is a receiving line of speeches by people working through a marriage chronologically. Two, prepared, three minutes each, and tell everyone else the floor is closed. A couple who agreed to be looked at agreed to a moment, not to an evening of it.

6.The trip they postponed for the children

Most couples at twenty five have one, deferred so long it has become a joke rather than a plan. Twenty five years is usually the point where the children are grown, the money exists and the health still does. Booking it, rather than suggesting it, is the difference between a nice idea and a thing that happens.

7.Ask them to tell the story properly, on camera

How they met, what the wedding was actually like, what nobody knows about the first year. Their children have heard fragments and have never heard it straight through. Twenty minutes on a phone, asked properly and not at a party, is the recording the family will still be playing in thirty years.

8.Do not make it a review of the marriage

Montages that walk through twenty five years chronologically turn into an obituary shape, and the couple can feel it. Pick a handful of specific things instead: one year, one photograph, one story each. Specific reads as knowing them. Comprehensive reads as summing them up.

9.A dinner for eight beats a party for eighty

If the couple wants small, go properly small and spend the whole budget on it. The restaurant they would never book, the wine somebody has to choose carefully, one long table. Eight people who all know each other produces a better evening than eighty who do not, and it costs less.

10.Give them the day off from being hosts

Whoever organizes this, the couple should arrive to it and leave from it having done nothing. That means no cooking, no greeting people at a door, no settling a bill, no driving. Twenty five years of hosting other people is exactly the thing this day is supposed to interrupt.

11.Write to them separately

Almost everything a couple receives at twenty five is addressed to them jointly, which is fine and also means nobody says anything to either of them in particular. Two letters, one each, saying what you have watched them each do, is the thing that gets kept and reread.

12.Decide who is not being invited, and why

A twenty fifth has twenty five years of complication attached: an estranged sibling, a divorce inside the friend group, somebody who did not behave well. The couple should make those calls, not the organizer, and they should make them before the list goes out rather than in the week before.

Quick answers

What do you do for a 25th wedding anniversary?

Ask the couple first and take the answer seriously, because they and the people planning it usually want opposite things. If they want small, spend the whole budget on a dinner for eight. If they want to be celebrated, cap the speeches at two and make sure they arrive as guests rather than hosts.

What is the traditional 25th anniversary gift?

Silver, and it is the oldest and best understood entry on the anniversary chart. Buying a new silver object usually produces something for a cupboard. Silver they already own works better: the wedding cutlery cleaned and used, or a piece from a parent brought back into the house.

Should you throw a surprise party for a 25th anniversary?

Usually not, unless you already know they want to be looked at. A surprise removes the one decision that matters most here, which is whether the day is public or private, and twenty five years in most couples have a firm opinion about that.

What is a good 25th anniversary gift for parents?

Messages collected from people who were at the wedding, the wedding photographs and video rescued off formats nothing plays any more, or the trip they postponed for you. All three are things they cannot buy for themselves and all three take weeks, so start early.
