First anniversary ideas that are not a smaller wedding

The first anniversary is the only one where the wedding is still fresh enough that everybody can compare, and that is exactly what makes people restage it. Same restaurant, same song, the top tier of the cake out of the freezer. It rarely lands, because the wedding was a performance for a room of a hundred people and this day belongs to two.

What works instead is the opposite move: something small enough that nobody else would understand it. Below are twelve ideas, including what to do with the paper tradition, and the one thing worth writing down while the year is still close enough to remember accurately.

The ideas, twelve of them

1.Do not restage the wedding

The same venue with two people in it is a smaller version of something that was already finished, and it invites a comparison the day cannot win. Everything about a wedding was scaled for a crowd. Year one is the first time the date is yours alone, and the honest version of it is usually quieter, cheaper and much more specific than anything you did that day.

2.Write the year down before you lose it

You will not remember year one as clearly again as you do right now. The apartment, the job, the thing you argued about in March, what you were both frightened of. An hour of writing it down, separately, then reading each other, is the only gift on this list that gets better every time you repeat it. Do it now and you have a set by year ten.

Put the year somewhere it survives

3.Paper, done properly

Year one is paper, and the tradition is only good for one thing: letters. Not a notebook, not a print, not a paper flower. A letter you actually wrote, sealed, and gave to be read alone. If you want a version that lasts, write one each year and do not read the old ones until year ten.

4.Go back to where you were before the wedding

The place you were together when it was still uncertain: the first apartment, the bar you closed, the ordinary street you walked. The wedding gets photographed and remembered by everybody. That earlier part had no audience and no pictures, and going back to it is a much stranger and better experience than going back to the venue.

5.Order the food you ate that week, not that day

Everybody remembers the wedding meal and almost nobody enjoyed it. What you actually ate in the days around it, exhausted, in a kitchen or a hotel room or a car, is the food with the memory in it. Recreating that is funnier, cheaper and lands closer than any restaurant.

6.Watch the footage nobody edited

Not the wedding video. The phone clips: guests filming sideways, the bit before the ceremony, thirty seconds of somebody laughing off camera. That material sits unwatched on two phones and is far better a year later than the professional edit, which was made to be shown to other people.

7.Ask the question you have both been avoiding

Year one is early enough that most couples have one topic they keep deferring: money, where you live, whether you want children, a parent who needs help. Setting aside part of an anniversary to actually have it, kindly and without a deadline attached, is worth more to the marriage than any dinner. It is not romantic and it is the most useful thing here.

8.If a wedding gift is still unopened, deal with it

Nearly every couple has a box. Open it together, use what is useful, and give away what is not without guilt. It sounds like admin because it is, and it also draws a line under the wedding as an event, which is exactly what a first anniversary is for.

9.Get one good photograph of the two of you now

You have hundreds from the wedding and almost none since, and the ones since are all selfies. Twenty minutes with somebody who can take a picture, dressed as you actually dress, produces the image you will still be using when the wedding photos start to look like a costume.

10.Thank the person who did the most

Somebody carried more of the wedding than anybody acknowledged at the time: a parent, a sibling, the friend who handled a crisis you only heard about afterwards. A year later, when nobody is expecting it, is the best possible moment to say so properly.

11.Keep it on a weeknight if that is the truth of it

A first anniversary that has to be a Saturday production becomes another event to organize, and year one is usually the year with the least money and the most exhaustion. A Tuesday evening with the phones in another room is not a lesser version of this. For most couples it is the accurate one.

12.Decide what you are going to do every year

The most valuable thing a first anniversary can produce is a tradition small enough to survive a bad year: the same walk, the same meal, the same letter, the same question asked out loud. Pick something you could still manage with a newborn, no money, or in a different country. That is the test it has to pass.

Quick answers

What should you do for your first wedding anniversary?

Something small and specific rather than a smaller version of the wedding. The wedding was performed for a room; this is the first time the date belongs to the two of you. Going back to somewhere you were together before the wedding usually lands better than returning to the venue.

What is the first anniversary gift tradition?

Paper, and the only use of it worth bothering with is a letter. Write one each year, seal it, and do not read the old ones until a milestone. A paper-themed object bought to satisfy the chart is the tradition being obeyed rather than used.

Is it bad to celebrate your first anniversary at the wedding venue?

It invites a comparison the day cannot win. The venue was scaled for a hundred people and two of you in it is a quieter version of something already finished. If you want to revisit somewhere, pick a place from before the wedding, when there was no audience and no photographer.

What should you write for a first anniversary?

Write the year down while you still remember it accurately: the apartment, the jobs, what you were frightened of, the thing you argued about. Both of you separately, then read each other. It is the only anniversary gift that gets better every time you repeat it.
