1.Be specific, not generous
The difference between a gift that lands and one that is politely thanked is almost never the price. It is whether the thing could have been given to anybody else. "I got you a candle" is generous. "I got you the coffee from the place you talked about for twenty minutes in Portland" is specific. Specific proves attention, and attention is the actual gift, so aim your effort at remembering rather than at spending.
